A Vuković mate is a checkmate pattern in which a rook and knight work together to trap the enemy king. The rook delivers the checkmate, usually from a rank or file next to the king, while the **knight controls key escape squares that the rook cannot cover.
The rook is typically protected by a third piece—often a queen, bishop, or another rook—so the king cannot capture it. With the knight blocking the king's remaining escape routes and the supporting piece defending the rook, the king is left with no legal moves and is checkmated.
The pattern is named after chess author and master Vladimir Vuković.
